Synopsis:
From a practitioner's perspective, Eeshani Lasya will introduce the eight classical styles of Indian dance, with a special focus on Bharatanatyam, contextualizing them in light of the classical Indian treatise on the arts, Nāṭya Śāstra.
During the session, she will explore the origins and history of Bharatanatyam in the Indian subcontinent, highlighting its role as a form of spiritual, aesthetic, and narrative expression. Through practical demonstrations of gestures and expressions derived from Nāṭya Śāstra, Eeshani will explain how classical Indian dance communicates stories and myths through movement, rhythm, and visual imagery.
Using an autoethnographic approach, the session will also reflect on how interpreting multiple roles in a single choreography—such as a deity, a devotee, a male or female figure—affects the practitioner's body-mind relationship. The session will seek to reveal how dance, produced from gestures, movements, and facial expressions, emerges not only from technical training but above all from the artist's inner engagement and conscious mind, also revealing the profound connection between spirituality, emotion, and bodily expression as central elements in the process of cultural transmission.
Instructor: Eeshani Lasya
Dancer, choreographer, and visual artist. Director of NADA DANCE and co-founder of the NADA project, founder of the Upāyana Project, she is currently the communications coordinator and Bharatanatyam teacher for the Hindu Community of Portugal.
